Let's get started!
Both Equipment and Stock records include a Barcode field. You can enter an Equipment ID, SKU, or even an unrelated barcode number. For example, a manufacturer might include a barcode on product packaging, but a customer may prefer to use their own SKU instead.
Barcode Types
There are many barcode formats, but Code-128 is one of the most versatile and widely used. It supports all 128 ASCII characters (letters, numbers, and symbols), which allows for:
High data density (more information in less space).
Variable character lengths.
Built-in checksum for error detection.
Many other barcode types only support numeric data and require a fixed number of digits, as seen in most retail barcodes.
QR Codes
QR Codes work similarly. While they’re often linked to URLs, they can also store any text string, including Equipment IDs that don’t reference a website.
Customers can apply QR codes or barcodes to their equipment for easier tracking.
For example, a company like DHL might print and attach barcodes to equipment across multiple warehouses. If a piece of equipment breaks down, an engineer can simply scan the barcode to create a new job in the SG Mobile App.
Scanning and Updating
A field engineer can also use barcode scanning to correct an ID error on a job.
To do this:
Select Change Equipment in the SG Mobile App.
Scan the barcode.
The system updates the record automatically.
These barcodes differ from the web-based QR codes used for service history or job creation. In this case, the QR codes only reference Equipment IDs, not URLs.

Using Barcodes for Stock
When adding stock parts to a job, users can scan barcodes directly from:
Manufacturer labels on the parts.
Custom barcodes printed and attached to stock items.
While Service Geeni doesn’t currently offer built-in barcode printing, there are many low-cost tools available. You can simply paste a text string (such as an Equipment ID or SKU) into these programs and generate a printable barcode instantly.

The Jobs, Equipment, and Stock Part search screens all include a barcode icon.
Tapping this icon activates your device’s camera, allowing you to scan a barcode directly.
This will select the item and bring up all its details.
For best results, ensure you’re working in a well-lit area. If you often work in darker spaces, carrying a small torch will help the camera read the code more reliably.
